In 5–6 June 2010 the King’s Parade will once again start in Prague and ride to Karlštejn. You can also set out together with the emperor, his wife Eliška Pomořanská, dozens of horseback riders and courtiers in carriages, or just enjoy a single trip to one of the parade’s various stops where the local municipalities organise entertaining programs.
This year, the steamer sails Motol (steamer Czechia) 15-16th June2009 at 20:00 by Štefánikova mostu from Dvořákova nábřeží. The cruise will be a traditional four-hour ride but with the novelty of a themed motif. This year CASINO PARTY!!!.
Come, you're welcome!
Social event on cruise is one of the longest traditions of student at our faculty. Motolak organised the Steamboat party last year and invited all teachers and students to enjoy the evening in the unique atmosphere of a summer evening on Vlatava river.
We have a small problem deciding the date, finally we decided on the June 15th, 2010.
The capacity of the steamboat "Czechia" is respectable, it is among the largest and most modern ships on the Vltava, but don't wait to long to buy tickets last minute. I believe that in time trials to find time for each other "social grooming". We look forward to seeing you.

South Bohemia Trip 2010

Trip To South Bohemia
Being a veteran of these Czech trips, I was looking forward to this excursion, to South Bohemia, with vehement anticipation. In fact, to be honest, I had trouble sleeping the night before. Ok. So perhaps I exaggerated with the last sentence but was looking forward to it nonetheless. Our first stop on our whirlwind two day tour was the sleepy and timeless little village of Holašovice. About 160 km from Praha central, Holašovice is enveloped by the stunning marshlands of South Bohemia. Comprising of several rural Baroque style buildings centred by a traditional village green and pond, Holašovice is one of the UNESCO’s World Cultural and Natural Heritage sites and seems untouched but the rigours of modernisation.
Moving on from Holašovice, we ventured further south, deep into what would have been Schwarzenberg family territory. The House of Schwarzenberg presided over Bohemia from the 17th century through to the early 20th century. They owned various fortifications throughout the region including the castles at Český Krumlov, Zvíkov, and our next destination, Hluboká. Overlooking the small town, the crisp, white chateau is stunning and is encompassed by beautiful gardens. The Schwarzenberg resided here until 1939 when the then head of the House had to emigrate overseas to evade the Nazis. The chateau has been reconstructed twice, firstly in the Baroque style then into the Neo- Gothic architecture thanks mainly due to the extensive finances of the Schwarzenberg family and it bears a remarkable resemblance to Windsor Castle in England. Interestingly, the castle has been used in a scene for the film Shanghai Knights starring Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan.
Walking away from the chateau we managed to stop by most people’s favourite destination, Hluboká zoo. Of course, not as large as Prague zoo but had a fair range of animals, including monkeys, flamingos and about 10 species of owl.
South Bohemia is splattered by numerous large ponds, the largest of the region, Svět, was located very near our next destination, Třeboň. As the night was beginning to draw in on our first day, we decided to check into our hotel, Hotel Petra Voka, named after the last member of the House of Rosenberg dynasty. We then headed into Třeboň, famous for its carp fish and local Regent brew, for a bite to eat and a cheeky beer, before hitting the hay.
The warm sunlight filtered through our drapes to wake us and we set about a quick breakfast before moving back to Třeboň and to the Rosenberg Chateau. The Rosenberg Chateau, not as big and brash as the other castles, was more delicate and compact, but the courtyard, however, was very much open and picturesque. The House of Rosenberg habited this Chateau in the 14th century, and reconstructed it twice, almost completely after the fire in 1562. When the last of the Rosenberg family had passed in 1611, the chateau moved through various hands before ending up with the Schwarzenbergs 1660.
After lunch we walked along the canals and began to circumnavigate the pond Svět passing the nearby fisheries. We moved into the nearby woods on the outskirts of the town and as we followed the nature trail deeper into the woodland we turned the corner to see a breathtaking monument concealed amongst the trees. The Schwarzenberg family tomb. The Neo- Gothic structure, completed in 1877, almost fairy tale like would not have looked out of place in Nosferatu or Disney’s Magic Kingdom. The tomb provided the piece de resistance to a wonderful two days in South Bohemia.
A big thank you to Petra Fabingerová and Hana Škrlová for all their efforts in organising a memorable trip.

In late February 2010 the AIMS Events Team hosted their first ever Pro Evolution Soccer Tournament! There were 16 people battling it out at Red Room, by Karlovo Namesti. Whether you're a star on the pitch or not, this was a chance to show off your play station soccer skills in this mammoth Pro Evo tournament..
Contestants played rounds on a knock-out basis, competing for a place in the quarter- and semi-finals. Finally the two best players then competed in a nail-biting grand finale, for the first prize as the Charles University Pro Evolution Champion 2010.
Whilst the guys were in play station heaven, the audience cheered them on taking full advantage of the very reasonably priced beer. The event was enjoyed by all, it was a chance to get together and talk about recent adventures, swap tales of an exhausting day at the faculty or speculate on who would win.
Preparations for this year’s Academic Conference is wrapping up now. We have received a record number of 125 abstracts this year! Prof. Zuna of the scientific committee had the arduous task of selecting only 24 abstracts to be presented as lectures for the event. This year the lectures are divided roughly into monothematic units. Out of the total contributions, it is clear that through this approach, there will be exceptionally high-quality poster contributions. Presentations of the individual sections – in lecture and poster form – were taken upon by the young and slightly older postgraduates of our faculty. Take the opportunity to have a look at the selected posters, along with the Chairs and listen to the discussions between them and the presenting authors.

UPDATE:
Czechs versus the world basketball match report
The international students have been playing basketball for a little over a year and a half, but their first competitive match came on Wednesday 17th March at the Vetrnik Indoor Courts against the Czech Team whom had the Dean of the faculty playing for them. Preparations for the Internationals could not have gone any worse; the team had been ravaged by niggling injuries, coupled together with the long term injury of Vishal Kakkar, player coach Tariq Kwaees, whom was also out with an injury, had to settle for a makeshift line-up. The starting five players, Captain Jonas Hermann, Paul Waschk, Spyros Drakopoulos, Alex Lazaridis and Stefan Pinkava had their hands full, as the first quarter saw them produce an uncohesive performance ending 17-7 down. The passing, marking and shooting were woeful and could have been attributed to first big game nerves. The break brought about a verbal tirade from Jonas to rally his troops after an insipid first quarter performance. Substitutes Ray Krishnan, Fabia Cerqueira and Jerry John were brought on to freshen things up.
2nd fac plays regularly on Fridays at 2 pm at Vetrnik basketball court. Please contact Spyros Drakopoulous (
